A Couple of Questions for ... Rev. Al Sharpton
By Marc D. Allan
Rev. Al Sharpton participates in "Hip Hop vs. America," a BET town hall-style program scheduled to air in the fall.
Q: You've made some critical public mistakes. Let's play devil's advocate. Shouldn't Imus have been given another shot? A: I paid for my public mistakes. And so should Imus. Imus didn't ask for forgiveness; he asked for immunity. Sure he should be forgiven. Forgiveness means you pay for what you did and then you move on. If Imus surfaces again, nobody's saying he shouldn't work again. We're going to watch and see what happens. But what he wanted was to be a repeat offender and decide his own penalty. That you can't do.
Q: So if CBS brings him back … A: We'll see what the basis is and we'll see if he repeats the same behavior. If I make a statement or Jesse Jackson makes a statement and we lose votes for that, lose funding for our organizations, we paid for it. Imus wanted no pay: Forgive me, I'm sorry, business as usual. That's not forgiveness. That's amnesty.
