A Couple of Questions for ... Neil Patrick Harris
By Marc D. Allan
Neil Patrick Harris plays Barney on the CBS sitcom "How I Met Your Mother," which returns this fall for its third season.
Q: You seem to have made the transition from kid on TV to adult on TV seamlessly. Was it as easy as it looked?
A: No. It wasn't, conversely, difficult, but history truncates itself. So even though five years went by, it just seems like you sort of leaped from one to the other. But I attribute it to theater. I was lucky enough to be invited to be part of amazing theatrical productions that allowed me to reinvent myself physically, then re-approach television from a grown-up standpoint. I didn't feel like I was still carrying the anchor of my childhood with me.
Q: You were hilarious in "Harold and Kumar Go to White Castle." I don't think there are a lot of actors who would take that role because they're so protective of their image.
A: I was protective. I had it stipulated contractually that any revisions that had to do with me I had to oversee and give the thumbs-up or thumbs-down to, just because I wanted to protect myself. But the revisions were like, "He does a line of coke off a stripper's ass." And I thought that was so bold that they would never keep it in the movie. So I was like, "Great. It's hilarious." And it's in the movie. But it worked out well.
