A Couple of Questions for ... Jon Hamm

Jon Hamm stars as Don Draper in Mad Men, which returns for a second season July 27 on AMC:

Q: Do you think Don Draper knows what's wrong with him?

A: Maybe. I think a lot of us know what's wrong with us. I think we find that it's harder to fix than maybe we endeavor to try to fix. So I think maybe. This is a man who's compartmentalized a significant portion of his life, and once those walls are erected, they're kind of hard to break through and break down. So whether he knows or not, it's a completely different question whether he's going to do anything or not.

Q: One of the most interesting things about Mad Men is all of the things that aren't said. As an actor, what's that like to play?

A: It's scary a lot of times, especially given the nature of a lot of television writing. Everything's sort of laid out and hit on the head very clearly. In fact, scripts are rewritten to make it even more obvious to certain people. So you have to have a lot of trust in your material and you have to have a lot of trust in your post-production people and your editors that they will let that moment play and they won't cut it for time. It's scary, but ultimately it's incredibly rewarding because you're creating something that is significantly different than most in its pace and its storytelling.
